Abstract
Certain parts of the Belgian coast are vulnerable to severe storms due to the high risk of flooding. Such an area is situated south of Ostend harbor and in December 2013 was hit by a severe storm. Although the predicted water levels were at highest level since 1953, due to the mild wave height the anticipated flooding of the highly urbanized inland areas did not took place. To investigate the impact of the storm on the study zone a 1D numerical model was used along with input data as measured at the site: topography, sediment size and hydrodynamic forcing. The results of simulations were in line with the observations and the daily changes of the beach morphology could be simulated. The storm had a limited impact on the study zone most probably due to the mild wave conditions and a good volumetric state of the beach.
